LEARN A LION: Eight Questions with Kierra Male

LEARN A LION: Eight Questions with Kierra Male

Wed, Nov. 12, 2014 - [Women's Cross Country]

HENDERSON, Tenn. - Every Wednesday throughout the school year, a Freed-Hardeman student-athlete will be featured as part of the "Learn A Lion" series.

Kierra Male is a junior on the women's cross country team.  The Charleston, S.C., native talks about sport-induced asthma, plans after gradution and Coach Spradlin's spill in Louisville.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Well, I am pretty open so there is not much that people don’t know about me, but I guess not many people know that I have sports-induced asthma and have to use an inhaler before running (or exercising in general.) I also don’t have finger prints.

What do you plan to do after college?
I want to teach! (Elementary Education K-6). I have a back-up plan of joining a landscaping company and working my way up. I love doing yard work.

What race do you consider to be the best of your career - at any level?
I would say my Vanderbilt race from earlier this season because that is my current PR (personal record) race!

Complete the sentence: If I was not running cross country in college, I would be…
Fat.

What’s your best Coach Spradlin story that won’t get you in trouble?
It pretty much flooded at our Louisville race last season, it was pouring the whole time we were running and it was just a giant mud puddle all over the course. Well, on the way back to the bus, coach runs, and slides through the mud, but ended up falling flat on his butt, in front of the whole team. He jumped up and said “Let’s do that again!”

Why did you choose to run at FHU?
I was already running on my own and a friend encouraged me to join the team!

What has been your favorite class?
At Freed in general, Teaching Reading to Children. Shawna Northrop is my favorite professor, and I learned a lot from that class. This semester, Spanish.

What activities do you participate in outside of athletics?
I work Grounds here at Freed, and I consider it to be an activity because I love my job! I hang out with my “adopted” family here in Henderson. I love getting to do volunteer work. I am also in the Training room a lot for rehab because I am always injured! (I’m not meant to be a runner and my body knows it.)
