FHU Cross Country Hosts First Ever Freed Speed Open

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Lion and Lady Lion cross country teams hosted their first ever home meet on Saturday and the familiar surroundings seemed to help FHU get a solid start to the season.

The Lady Lions began the day at 8:30 AM on Saturday with the women's 5K race. The women's race consisted of 10 teams with a total of 65 runners in the field. Ann Asipan from the University of Tennessee at Martin, took home top honors finishing in first place with a time of 18:46. UT Martin rounded out the top four with top finishes by Chantel Wilson, Cherie Wilson and Mary Ballinger.

Sloan Scott led the FHU women's team, finishing in 15th place with a time of 20:33. Libby Elliott was the second runner to cross the finish line for the Lady Lions in 32nd place with a time of 22:51. Cassie Searcy rounded out the top three for the Lady Lions finishing 38th with a time of 24:59.

The men's cross country 8K race began at 9:15 AM following the women's race. The race consisted of 10 teams with a total of 67 runners in the field.

Bill Kinyor, from the University of Tennessee at Martin, took home top honors finishing in first place with a time of 26:45. A variety of schools were represented in the top five including Will Donelson (Union (Tenn.)), Michael McCullough (Columbia (Mo College), Matthew Viveiros (Bethel (Tenn.) College) and Tyler Lawson (Columbia College).

The top three runners for the Lions on Saturday were all freshmen. Blaine McKinney led the FHU men's team, finishing in 23rd place with a time of 29:45. Dillon Tucker finished close behind in 27th place with a time of 30:13 followed by Adam Dunlap, who finished in 32nd place with a time of 30:53.

The Lady Lion and Lion cross country teams will be back in action on October 3 for the Greater Louisville Cross County Classic in Louisville, Ky.
