HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team picked up a split with Central Baptist College Saturday in the first round of the AMC Tournament as they dropped the first game 5-0, but followed it up with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

With the split, the Lady Lions force a tie-breaking game three to be played Sunday at 1:00 PM at Morgan Stadium. FHU (26-18) also recognized 13 players who were named to the American Midwest Conference All-Academic Team prior to the start of the second game of the series.

Makenzie Prince (12-10) suffered the loss in the opening game after working seven full innings and giving up five hits and three earned runs. Despite the loss, Prince was able to find some rhythm in the circle, as she struck out nine batters.

The Lady Lions mustered just two hits in the opening game, as they struggled at the plate. Central Baptist (27-29), on the other hand, would have no trouble finding their bats as they crossed the plate five times to keep a comfortable lead.

The Mustangs got things started quickly with two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. One run would follow in the third and fifth innings and another in the sixth inning to give Central Baptist a 5-0 lead, which would be all they needed to shutout the Lady Lions in the opener.

The Lady Lions needed a win in the nightcap to force a tiebreaker and a win is what they got, as they were able to push enough runs across the board to pick up the 3-2 win.

Mallory Spurlock (13-7) picked up the win after working seven full innings and allowing just four hits while striking out four batters. The Lady Lions pounded out seven hits in the nightcap, led by Caitlyn Carter and Jenna Graham who accounted for four of FHU's seven hits in the game.

Central Baptist would strike first in the bottom of the third inning with one run; however, FHU would stop the momentum early with a run in the fourth inning to even things up at one apiece.

The Mustangs would add another run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 midway through the game. However, FHU would put together a two-run fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead, which would prove to be all they needed to even the series up at one game apiece.

With the split, both teams will be required to play a tie-breaking third game, which will be held Sunday at 1:00 PM at Morgan Stadium. The winner of Sunday's game advances to the next round of the AMC Tournament.
