Lady Lions split in opening day of Lindsey Wilson Classic

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball team opened the 2016 season Friday at the Lindsey Wilson College Classic and split a pair of matches after falling to University of the Cumberlands in the 12:00 PM match-up, but following it up with a 3-1 victory over Indiana University-East in the final match of the day.

The Lady Lions began tournament play by facing a tough University of the Cumberlands team currently receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll. The Patriots (2-0, 0-0 MSC) controlled the offensive attack in the match and out-hit FHU (1-1, 0-0 AMC) 46-28 on their way to a win in straight sets over the Lady Lions (25-19, 25-15, 25-13).

Despite the loss, the Lady Lions received solid production from veteran players as well as fresh faces to the program. FHU was led in scoring by  Daymari Brito and  freshman Ashton Webb, who each had seven kills in the match. Freshman setter Lindsey Gordon had 22 assists in the match while libero Bailey Brown contributed on the defensive end with nine digs. 

The Lady Lions hit just .122 percent in the match and committed a staggering 17 attack errors in the loss.

The Patriots were led in scoring by Megan Ganser, who had 11 kills on 19 attempts. Jessica Severs followed close behind with 10 kills of her own while contributing three service aces. Setter Lynsey Short dished out 31 assists in the match while Sydney Beck countered FHU's attack with 13 digs in the win.

Despite a challenging first game of the tournament, the Lady Lions were able to turn things around in the 4:00 PM match-up against Indiana University-East, as they pounded out 38 kills on their way to a 3-1 victory (15-25, 25-19, 25-22, 27-25).

The Lady Lions were led in scoring once again by Daymari Brito who had 21 kills. Setter Lindsey Gordon continued her strong day and racked up 31 assists in the match while Bailey Brown contributed on the defensive end with 11 digs.

Although the Lady Lions would fall behind with with a 25-15 loss in the opening set, they would battle back to win the next three as they relied on the offensive attack of Daymari Brito along with the one-two punch from freshman Lindsey Gordon to take the match. 

With the opening day split, the Lady Lions hold at 1-1 on the season.

NEXT UP: The Lady Lions will be back in action Saturday for day two of the Lindsey Wilson College Classic as they face Indiana University-Southeast at 10:00 AM followed by a match-up with Cumberland (Tenn.) University at 4:00 PM to conclude the tournament.
