HENDERSON, Tenn. - It might have taken five sets to do it, but the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball team was able to pick up their first conference win of the season Saturday as they defeated Harris Stowe State University (19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-15, 15-9).

The match was back and forth from the beginning, as the Lady Lions (3-5, 1-1 AMC) dropped the first set 25-19 before rebounding and taking the second set 25-23.

The match continued to be tight the entire way, as the third and fourth sets would tell the same story as Harris Stowe (2-8, 0-2 AMC) would pick up a commanding 25-16 win in the third set before the Lady Lions rebounded with a 25-15 win in the fourth.

The Lady Lions needed their offense to come through in the final set and they delivered, as they were able to give themselves enough cushion to pick up the 15-9 win to take the match.

Sophomore Beth Maples came on strong to lead the Lady Lions on the attack with 16 kills while veteran Daymari Brito continued her strong play with 14 kills of her own. Brito also found success at the service line, as she contributed three service aces in the win.

Setter Lindsey Gordon continued her dominance and put up a double double in the match, as she dished out an impressive 30 assists and countered HSSU's attack with 25 digs.

Miaya Peacock led Harris Stowe on the attack with 11 kills while Akilah Thomas, Shamekia McDowell and Kiarra Herron followed close behind, each with seven kills. Kennedy Netters dished out 32 assists and picked up 20 defensive digs in the match.

With the win, the Lady Lions improve to 3-5 on the season and stand at 1-1 in conference play.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions will be back in action next weekend, as they host William Woods (Mo.) University on Friday, September 23 for a 7:00 PM match-up followed by a match-up with No. 7 Park University on Saturday, September 24 at the Brewer Sports Center.
