HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lion softball team added depth behind the plate for the upcoming season with the signing of Amber Vansandt of Killen, Ala.

Vansandt prepped at Loretto HS in Loretto, Tenn., as a highly-decorated athlete in both softball and volleyball.  The 5-foot-3 catcher hit .420 with 27 doubles, six homeruns and 45 RBI over her junior and senior seasons on her way to being named all-district and team MVP.  As a junior, she was also selected as the team's offensive player of the year and was placed on the Daily Herald all-area squad.

She also excelled on the volleyball court, where she was an all-district and all-region selection and was voted the team's best passer in 2008.

Vansandt, who plans to major in criminal justice, graduated cum laude and was nominated for Miss Loretto High School.  She participated in several extracurricular activities including the peer mentoring program.

She will help to add depth behind the plate after Freed-Hardeman graduated all-conference catcher Brittany Bradford.

"Amber will have some big shoes to fill this season with the graduation of Bradford," said FHU head coach Todd Humphry. "We feel that Amber will have a good chance of helping at the plate offensively early in her freshman season."

Amber is the daughter of Van and Maryanne Vansandt.
