TALLADEGA, Ala. - Despite leading by as many as 12 in the first half Monday, the Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team struggled to hold off Talladega College in the second half, as they fell 79-73 on the road in Talladega, Ala.

Grant Teichmann led the Lions on the attack with 18 points. Fitzgerald Hopkins followed close behind with 14 points, as he went 5-for-7 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc.

Spencer Garner rounded out the scoring leaders for the Lions with 13 points while Austin Dempsey pulled down six rebounds. Despite the loss, the Lions (6-3) shot an impressive 46 percent from the field compared to Talladega College (13-4) who shot just 43 percent from the field.

Keynan Gardner-Willis and Jordan Washington led the Tornadoes on the attack, each with 17 points while Trevin Steede followed close behind with 15 points. Gardner-Willis also led Talladega on the glass with eight rebounds.

Both teams were fairly even on the offensive end to start the game, as the Lions held a slight edge at the 9-8 mark with 15:31 remaining before going on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 17-9, capped off by a three point field goal by Fitzgerald Hopkins.

FHU would reach their largest lead of the half at the 26-14 mark with 7:28 remaining before Talladega would start to chip away at the lead. The Tornadoes would find their rhythm to close the half, as they out-shot the Lions 16-11 to enter the break down seven at the 37-30 mark.

Talladega would carry the momentum into the second stanza, as they opened the half on a 7-0 run to close the gap to two at the 39-37 mark. A three-point field goal by Jordan Washington and a jump shot by Keynan Gardner-Willis would give the Tornadoes their first lead since the opening five minutes of the first half, as they pulled ahead 42-41.

The Tornadoes continued their hot streak on the ensuing possesions, as they out-shot the Lions 22-4 in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a commanding 52-41 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

After falling behind 56-42 with under 10 minutes to play in the game, the Lions would respond with a 5-0 run of their own, courtesy of a three-point field goal by Grant Teichmann and two free throws by Stephen Shell to pull within nine at the 47-56 mark with nine minutes remaining.

The Lions would keep their foot on the gas pedal over the next two minutes after falling behind 61-50, as they responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to five at the 61-57 mark following two made free throws by Fitzgerald Hopkins.

The hot shooting would continue for the Lions over the next two minutes, as they were able to pull within one at the 71-70 mark. However, one point would be as close as FHU would get, as the Tornadoes finished the game strong at the stripe to secure the 79-73 victory.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 6-3 on the season. Talladega improves to 13-4 on the season with the win.
