ST. LOUIS, Mo. - For the second straight week, the American Midwest Conference women's basketball Game of the Week features a battle of teams in the top-15 in the current NAIA Division I women's basketball rating. Tonight, the #12 Columbia College Cougars (12-2/6-2 AMC) will head south to Henderson Tennessee where they will attempt to become the first team this season to knock off the #1 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions (14-0/8-0 AMC). Tip-off is slated for 5:30 at the Brewer Sports Center.

WHO

Columbia Cougars: This season, Columbia has been a team that has put together a relatively rare combination of a high-powered offense with a solid defense, and it has showed in their results. The Cougars are out-scoring their opponents by an average of 25 points per game, and they have allowed their opponents to score 70 points only once this season. Along those lines, the Cougars have held their opponents below 60 points nine times, below 50 on six occasions, and below 40 twice. Offensively, Columbia has scored at least 70 points eight times this season, breaking 80 seven times, eclipsing 90 in three games, and twice hitting triple digits.

Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions: Taleeah Cross was a known quantity for the Lady Lions coming into the season, and to an extent, so was Kim Mallory, but recently, Mallory has emerged as a major scoring threat for coach Dale Neal's club. Mallory is averaging nearly 17 points per game – seven better than her previous career high – and a big part of the reason for that has been her 3-point shooting. Mallory is shooting nearly 39% from beyond the arc, and she has made nearly twice as many 3-point field goals this season as in her first two seasons combined. She also recently scored a career-high 28 points in a win over Park University.

WHAT

Since 2008, the Lady Lions and Cougars have met 11 times, with Freed-Hardeman holding an 8-3 advantage in those meetings. The Cougars, however, have only beaten the Lady Lions once since FHU joined the AMC in 2013, a 67-58 win in Columbia on January 7, 2016.

WHY

With the AMC season nearing the halfway point, Freed-Hardeman is nearing the point where they will hold the inside track to many of the secondary tiebreakers in  AMC play. Columbia on the other hand has already fallen on the road twice in AMC play, and a third road defeat would make things difficult on Columbia in a deep tiebreaker scenario.
