Dempsey's 25 leads Lions to victory over William Woods

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team got back on track in conference play Saturday, as they were able to pick up an impressive 90-64 victory over No. 19 William Woods University.

Austin Dempsey paced the Lions on the offensive end, as he put up 25 points in the match-up, courtesy of a 6-for-7 shooting performance from behind the arc. Trevor Randolph also found success from behind the arc, as he shot a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range and ended the day with 17 points.

Fitzgerald Hopkins also reached double digits in the match-up with 11 points while Sean Edwards chipped in nine points, a majority of which came in the second half. Spencer Garner led the Lions on the glass, as he pulled down seven rebounds in the win.

The Lions (10-6, 6-3 AMC) shot an impressive 53 percent from the field and 62 percent from behind the arc in the game compared to William Woods (12-5, 7-3 AMC) who shot just 35 percent from the field and 24 percent from behind the arc.

Trey Mitchell led the Owls on the offensive end with 16 points. Three other players reached double digits for William Woods, as Deon Petigrew put up 13 points while Torin Washington and DaShaun Stark chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Both teams went back and forth in the opening minutes of the game, as things were evened up at 21 apiece with 8:29 remaining in the first half. However, from there the Lions would dominate the final eight minutes of the half, as they out-shot the Owls 22-14 to take a 43-35 lead entering the break.

The hot shooting continued for the Lions in the second half, as Austin Dempsey and Trevor Randolph caught fire from behind the arc. The Lions reached their largest lead of the second half at the 80-50 mark with 4:55 remaining in the game, following a three-point field goal by Austin Dempsey for his 25th point of the game.

From there, the Lions would not allow the Owls to get any closer than 24 points, as they cruised to a 90-64 victory.

With the win, the Lions improve to 10-6 on the season and 6-3 in conference play. William Woods falls to 12-5 on the season and 7-3 in AMC play with the loss.

UP NEXT: The Lions are back in action on the road Thursday, January 12, as they make the trip to St. Louis, Mo. to face St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The Lady Lions kick things off first with a 5:30 PM tip followed by the men's game at 7:30 PM.
