Indoor Facility Provides Unique Approach for FHU Golf

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman University golf teams now have a way to practice indoors during the challenging winter months, as construction on an indoor practice facility was recently completed.

The design of the indoor facility could be referred to as a unique "approach", as the team transformed a racquetball court in the Brewer Sports Center into a full-service practice venue for its players.

In order to make the transformation possible, FHU Head Golf coach Chris Hodges partnered with Pro Putt Systems, Sky Trak, All Sport Systems and 5-Star Golf Mats to create the indoor facility, which was completed in December.

Pro Putt Systems designed two custom-made greens for the facility that can be utilized for both chipping and putting. The greens roll at a consistent 10’-5” on the stimpmeter, and also feature down-grain and into-the-grain realization. The indoor putting greens manufactured by Pro Putt systems are fully portable and can be used outdoors in the summer months and indoors during the winter months. The company is also the brand of choice for many PGA Tour players and golf professionals.

The golf team also partnered with All Sport Systems in providing two hitting cages with projection screens for the facility. By utilizing short-throw projectors and Sky Trak launch monitors, golfers can see instant results on every shot they hit, from drivers to wedges. 5StarGolfMats provided the 5’ x 5’ hitting mats that provide the realistic feedback.

Hodges said the facility would not have been possible without strong supporters of the golf program.

“This facility is a result of generous donations made by friends of FHU golf”, said Hodges.  “Within 45 days, a majority of the funds were raised to make the facility possible. Players have already been utilizing the facility to improve their game, which was our intended purpose from the beginning."

The FHU Golf teams begin their spring season March 6-7 at the Faulkner University Spring Invitational in Montgomery, Ala.
