HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team snapped a three game losing streak Tuesday night, as they battled Lyon College and came away with a 56-53 victory in a back and forth nail biter at the Brewer Sports Center.

Fitzgerald Hopkins led the Lions on the offensive end with 18 points, courtesy of a perfect 6-for-6 shooting performance from behind the arc. Sean Edwards followed close behind with 13 points of his own, including two clutch free throws down the stretch to help FHU secure the win.

FHU and Lyon College were evenly matched on the attack, as both teams shot 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc in the game to keep things tight the entire way. Tyler Robinson led the Scots on the offensive end, as he put up 16 points in the contest while Joe Burt followed close behind with 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Lions (17-9, 12-6 AMC) came out firing to start the game, as they jumped out to an early 14 point lead at the 21-7 mark with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

However, despite the hot start, the Lions would hit a dry spell and not score a single point over the next seven minutes, which allowed the Scots (13-13, 8-10 AMC) to go on an 11-0 scoring run to pull within three points at the 21-18 mark with five minutes remaining in the half.

FHU; however, would regroup in the final five minutes of the half, as they out-shot the Scots 8-4 to take a 29-22 lead entering the break. Hopkins led the charge for FHU in the first half, as he converted a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc to chip in nine points.

The Lions continued to battle in the second half, as they extended their lead to 12 at the 51-39 mark with seven minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Scots would find some offense of their own over the next four minutes, as they out-shot the Lions 14-1 to take their first lead of the game at the 53-52 mark with three minutes remaining in the game.

Joseph Williams; however, would come up big for the Lions in the final two minutes of the game, as he was able to corral a missed three-point field goal and lay it in to put FHU up 54-53. Williams also came up big on the defensive side of the floor, as he picked up two huge blocks to keep the Scots from regaining the lead.

Sean Edwards would connect on two free throws on the ensuing possession to put the Lions up 56-53, which would be all they needed to take home their 17th win of the season.

With the win, the Lions move to 17-9 on the season and 12-6 in conference play. Lyon College falls to 13-13 on the season and 8-10 in AMC play with the loss.

UP NEXT: The Lions are back in action Thursday, February 16th, as they make the trip to Columbia, Mo. to take on No. 3 Columbia College. The Lady Lions kick things off first at 5:30 PM followed by the men's game at 7:30 PM.
