HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team battled the entire way, but in the end came up short, as they fell to William Woods Thursday night with a final score of 91-77 to end their hopes of an AMC Conference Championship.

Despite the loss, the Lions received solid contribution on the offensive end from Marcus Baldwin and Fitzgerald Hopkins, as each ended the night with 17 points. Grant Teichmann also reached double digits in the match-up with 13 points after going 2-for-3 from behind the arc.

DaShaun Stark led William Woods on the offensive end with 27 points after going 4-for-6 from behind the arc and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Three other players reached double digits for the Owls, as Trey Mitchell put up 15 points while Torin Washington chipped in 13. Kayaire Marshall rounded out the scoring for William Woods with 11 points.

Both teams went back and forth to start the game, as the first half saw five ties and four lead changes. However, the Lions were able to gain some separation with four minutes remaining in the half, as they went on a 6-0 run to reach their largest lead of the half at the 44-38 mark with one minute remaining.

However, William Woods responded with a 4-0 run of their own to close the gap to two points, as FHU entered the break up 44-42. Marcus Baldwin led the Lions on the offensive end in the first half with 14 points, courtesy of a 6-for-7 shooting performance from the field.

However, despite ending the half on a positive note, the Lions struggled in the opening minutes of the second half and William Woods took advantage. FHU struggled to get anything to fall, as it took nearly 10 minutes to find their first basket in the second stanza. William Woods, on the other hand could not miss, as they went on a 26-0 run in the opening ten minutes of the second half to jump out to a 70-46 lead with 11:30 remaining in regulation, despite trailing by two points entering the break.

The Lions; however, would not go down without a fight and would take control in the final minutes of the half, as they out-shot the Owls 29-10 over the next 10 minutes to pull within five points at the 80-75 mark with 1:05 remaining. However, five points would be as close as FHU would get, as William Woods came through with clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the 91-77 victory.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 19-12 on the season. The Owls improve to 21-10 on the season and advance to the AMC Championship Semifinal Round, where they will host No. 8 seed Missouri Baptist University, who shocked No. 1 seed Columbia College with the 78-73 victory.
