GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team held heir own against some of the top teams in the country Friday, but in the end they came up just short, as they suffered a 3-2 loss to Brenau (Ga.) University in the opening game and followed it up with a 2-1 loss to No. 22 LSU-Alexandria in the second game at the Gulf Coast Invitational.

The Lady Lions (0-2) came out strong in the opening game against Brenau University, as they held a 1-0 lead until the final inning of the game. However, the Golden Tigers (19-4) changed that in a hurry, as Kelsey Payne capitalized with a three-run homerun to put Brenau up 3-1 in the top half of the seventh inning.

The Lady Lions battled back in the bottom half of the seventh inning with another run, but could not push any more across, as they dropped the nail-biter with a final score of 3-2. Makenzie Prince (0-1) pitched a gem, as she worked a complete game and allowed just seven hits, a majority of which came late in the game. Caitlyn Carter and Annaka Baxter each contributed an RBI to keep the Lady Lions in the game down the stretch.

The Lady Lions continued to fight in the second game of the day against No. 22 LSU-Alexandria, but the Generals would be too much, as they pushed four runs across, which would prove to be too much for the Lady Lions to overcome, as they suffered the 4-2 loss in the nightcap.

With the losses, the Lady Lions fall to 0-2 on the season.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions continue play at the Gulf Coast Invitational Saturday, where they face College of Coastal Georgia. First pitch is set for 9:00 AM.
