HENDERSON, Tenn. - It's not often that a program can find a quality player still available near the end of the summer, but that is exactly what the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion basketball team did.
FHU added to its impressive class with the signing of Maria Bagwell, a guard from Nashville, Tenn. The 5-foot-7 Bagwell prepped at Hume-Fogg Magnet where she was named both District and Region MVP and helped lead her team to the TSSAA State Tournament with an upset of top-ranked Marshall Co. HS along the way.
Bagwell averaged 17.5 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and six steals per game as a senior while shooing 80 percent from the free throw line and 49 percent from the floor.
"Maria is a great fit for FHU and our basketball program," said FHU head coach Dale Neal. "In Hume-Fogg's regional game against Marshall County, she demonstrated her ability to take over a game. She plays with a lot of confidence. She handles well, can take it to the hole and is a great rebounding guard. We are thrilled that she has become a Lady Lion."
Maria is the daughter of Marcus and Sabrina Bagwell.
