ST. LOUIS, Mo – The American Midwest Conference has announced its third installment of the AMC Baseball Game of the Week, and this week’s edition features two teams looking to stay near the top of the heap in the AMC standings. The NAIA No. 23 Freed-Hardeman University Lions (13-7/4-2 AMC) will make the long trek to Park University (10-6/3-0 AMC) to battle the Pirates in a weekend set. The series will feature a double-header on Friday and a single game on Saturday.

Freed-Hardeman Lions

The Lions have been a bit of an enigma through the early going of the campaign. They opened the season with a series win at NAIA  No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett College and they are still the only team to have taken a series win from the Grizzlies, but they followed that up with a stretch that saw them lose 3-of-4 to Campbellsville and Cumberland University.

They bounced back and won eight straight, but then over the weekend, they lost the final two games of their series to William Woods University. The numbers reflect those inconsistencies as well, as the Lions have a team slash line of .267/.400/.444 offensively, and on the mound, they have a 4.75 Team ERA, and they are allowing opposing teams to hit .271, though they are limiting the power damage and holding down their walks and hit batsmen.

Park Pirates

The Pirates have been a streaky team in 2017, through 16 games, winning six-straight at one point, including a conference-opening sweep of Lindenwood-Belleville. But since Park’s three wins at GCS Ballpark, the Pirates have dropped five of their last seven, including a four-game losing streak last week stopped on in the team’s home opener, taking a Sunday afternoon twinbill from Baker University at Parkville. Park only has two lopsided losses on its slate, one of which was Tuesday, in seven innings at then-No. 25 MidAmerica Nazarene. Park’s lone bright spot in the game was David White’s first home run of the year, tying Shayne Kirkwood for the team lead in RBIs at 14. White is hitting .351, while dual-threat first baseman and pitcher Cole Doherty has cooled off of his .800 start to the season, hitting .484 with a pair of doubles to go with three saves on the mound, putting him nearly halfway to the Park single season saves record of seven, which was set a year ago by Ethan Smith.

Since the Lions entered the AMC for the 2014 season, Freed-Hardeman has dominated this series, winning eight of the 10 meetings. The Pirates, however, won two of the three regular season games last year – which were also played in Parkville – before FHU took a 16-4 win in the AMC Championship.

This series marks a turning point for both clubs. Park has played only one series to this point on the season in AMC play, and following this set, they will face a stiff test from the AMC’s newest baseball team  - Columbia College. For Freed-Hardeman, they head home after the weekend to open an 8-game home stand with the first five coming against Williams Baptist  College and Lindenwood University-Belleville.
