HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team picked up a pair of conference wins Saturday over William Woods University, as they pulled out a 4-3 victory in the opening game followed by a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Mallory Spurlock (3-1) picked up the win in both games after working one inning of relief in the opening game and pitching seven solid innings in the nightcap. Despite not getting credited with the win in the opening game, Makenzie Prince was solid in the circle, as she worked seven stellar innings and allowed just two hits and three unearned runs while striking out five.

The Lady Lions (4-3, 3-1 AMC) got things started in the opening game with two runs in the fourth inning, courtesy of a 2-RBI single to center-field by Kaylyn Graham to score Annaka Baxter and Lilly Bombard and put FHU up 2-0 midway through the game.

FHU would add another run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, as Jenna Graham crossed the plate after reaching on an infield hit and advancing to third on a double to deep right field by Makenzie Prince. Graham would cross the plate in the next sequence, as Annaka Baxter grounded out to short to bring the run in and put the Lady Lions up 3-0.

William Woods (14-13, 0-4 AMC); however, would not go down without a fight, as they pushed three runs of their own across in the top of the seventh inning to even things up at three apiece and eventually force extra innings.

However, as they have proven already this young season, the Lady Lions would deliver in the clutch late in the game. Hannah Wright and Lilly Bombard would get the inning started with two straight walks. Abbi Gooch would also reach on a walk later in the inning to load the bases with two outs. Caitlyn Carter would take care of things from there, as she was hit by a pitch to score Bombard and secure the 4-3 win.

Spurlock would continue her work in the circle in the nightcap and she did not disappoint, as she worked a complete game and allowed just three hits while striking out five to pitch her second shutout of the season.

It was all FHU in the nightcap, as the Lady Lions pounded out 12 hits, led by Annaka Baxter who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBI to provide momentum. In addition to the circle, Spurlock was also solid at the plate, as she went 2-for-3 on the day with a double of her own to complete her solid day. Caitlyn Carter rounded out the hitting for FHU with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

The Lady Lions got things started early with a one-run first inning, as Makenzie Prince crossed the plate after reaching on a walk and scoring off a RBI single to center field by Hannah Wright to put FHU up 1-0.

FHU would stay relatively quiet for the remainder of the game until the bottom of the sixth inning, where four runs crossed the plate to provide some insurance runs for the Lady Lions entering the final frame. Caitlyn Carter, Lilly Bombard, Mallory Spurlock and Kristen Hunsicker all crossed the plate in the inning to provide some much-needed insurance runs to secure the 5-0 shutout.

With the sweep, the Lady Lions move to 5-4 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. William Woods falls to 14-13 on the season and 0-4 in AMC play with the loss.
