COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team moved to 19-3 in conference play Wednesday, as they picked up a sweep of Stephens College with a 10-3 victory in the opening game followed by an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

Mallory Spurlock (9-2) picked up the win in the opener after working a complete game and allowing just six hits while striking out six. The Lady Lions pounded out 17 hits in the contest, led by Abbi Gooch, who went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a homerun and four RBI. Caitlyn Carter also found success at the plate, as she went 4-for-4 with an RBI while Kaylyn Graham belted a homerun of her own and went 2-for-5.

Freed-Hardeman (21-8, 19-3 AMC) got things started early in the opening game with a two-run first inning. Caitlyn Carter got the scoring drive started with a single to the infield and crossed the plate later in the inning, courtesy of Abbi Gooch, who reached on a wild throw by Stephens third baseman Bernadette Willis. Gooch also crossed the plate later in the inning following an RBI single by Jenna Graham to put FHU up 2-0 early.

The Lady Lions continued to roll in the second inning, as Gooch connected on a 2-2 pitch over the center field wall for a three-run blast to score Kristen Hunsicker and Carter to put FHU up 5-0.

The Stars (11-29, 4-18 AMC) would get one run back in the bottom of the second inning, as Barnadette Willis started the inning with a double to deep left field and crossed the plate following a passed ball to make it 5-1.

Stephens pushed one more run across in the bottom half of the sixth inning, as Katie Heaton doubled to deep center field to score Jessica Kane and close the gap to three runs at the 5-2 mark.

The Lady Lions; however, would not let their lead slip away, as they added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Graham sisters got the inning started with a bang, as Kaylyn Graham connected on a solo home run while  Jenna Graham crossed the plate following an RBI single by Mallory Spurlock to give FHU a four-run cushion at the 7-2 mark.

Lilly Bomard would take care of things from there, as she pounded out a double to deep center field to score Makenzie Prince and put the Lady Lions up 8-2 while Morgan Warren and Bombard also crossed the plate in the inning to put FHU up 10-2.

The Stars added one more run to their total in the bottom of the seventh inning following a solo homerun by Sarah Dooley, but it would not be enough, as the Lady Lions took the opening game with a final score of 10-3.

The Lady Lions continued to roll in the nightcap, as Hannah Wright (3-2) picked up the win after working four innings and allowing just six hits while striking out one. Makenzie Prince closed things out for FHU and provided three solid innings of relief and allowed just three hits while striking out two.

FHU had no trouble at the plate once again, as they pounded out 10 hits, led by Abbi Gooch who went 2-for-4 with a triple and five RBI. Kristen Hunsicker added to the hitting frenzy and went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a double and two RBI to round out the offfense for FHU.

The Stars struck first in the nightcap with three runs, as Amanda Diaz connected on a 2-RBI single to right field to score Jessica Kane and Katie Heaton and put Stephens up 2-0. Bernadette Willis also crossed the plate in the inning to put Stephens up 3-0 after Jamie Martin reached base on Caitlyn Carter's misplayed grounder at short.

FHU; however, would not be rattled by the early deficit, as they pushed five runs of their own across in the top of the second inning to take a 5-3 lead. Kristen Hunsicker got the scoring drive started for the Lady Lions with a RBI double to deep center field to score Jenna Graham and Makenzie Prince and close the gap to one run at the 3-2 mark.

Abbi Gooch gave the Lady Lions their first lead of the game later in the inning, as she pounded out a 3-RBI triple down the left field line to score Hunsicker, Morgan Warren and Caitlyn Carter and put FHU up 5-3.

The Stars would get one run back in the bottom of the second inning, as Gerica Curry crossed the plate following an RBI single by Jessica Kane to tighten things up at the 5-4 mark.

Abbi Gooch would give the Lady Lions a two-run cushion in the top of the fourth inning, as she connected on an RBI single to score Morgan Warren and put FHU up 6-4 mid-way through the game.

The Lady Lions shut down the Stars in the final three innings and added two insurance runs to their total in the top half of the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead, which would be all they needed to complete the sweep.

With the sweep, the Lady Lions improve to 21-8 on the season and 19-3 in conference play. Stephens College falls to 11-29 on the season and 4-18 in AMC play with the double header loss.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions are right back at it Thursday for their final game of the regular season, as they take on No. 3 Columbia College for a double header slated for 2:00 PM at the Antimi Softball Complex in Columbia, Mo.
