Lions sweep Morthland in Tuesday series; notch 30th win

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team reached 30 wins Tuesday, as they picked up a sweep of Morthland College with a 10-2 victory in the opening game followed by a 16-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Collin McPherson got the start on the mound for the Lions in the opener and did not disappoint, as he threw three solid innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Landon Sewell (4-1) was credited with the win, as he worked two innings and gave up just one hit while striking out four. T.J. Webb and Jordan Goff also logged an inning of relief in the win.

Although the Lions (30-18) combined for just seven hits in the opener, they made them count, as they had success pushing the runners around once they reached base. Bryce Lester led the Lions at the plate in the opener, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and five RBI. Wes Brooks also went 2-for-4 in the opener and pounded out two RBI and plated two runs.

The Lions kept things rolling in the nightcap, as they ran away with a 16-0 victory after finding their stride at the plate. Chase Young led FHU at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI. Collin McPherson also found success at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with a homerun and five RBI while Wes Evers pounded out a homerun of his own in the 16-0 shutout.

Casey Overturf (2-0) picked up the win in the nightcap after working an inning of relief and striking out three. Jared Humphry got the start on the mound and worked three solid innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Bailey Barnett, Seth Selby and Dalton Caviness each logged an inning of relief and allowed just three hits in the win.

With the sweep, the Lions move to 30-18 on the season. Morthland College falls to 3-41 on the season with the double header loss.

UP NEXT: The Lions are back in action on the road this weekend for their final conference series of the season, as they travel to Columbia, Mo. to face the Cougars of Columbia College. The Lions kick off the weekend Friday, April 28th with a double header slated for 1:00 PM. The Lions conclude the series with the Cougars Saturday with a single nine-inning game scheduled for 12:00 PM.
