Cougars Hand FHU Volleyball Straight-Sets Loss

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball team opened conference play Friday, as they played host to No. 7 Columbia College. Despite hanging tough the entire match, the Lady Lions suffered a 3-0 loss. (25-22, 25-21, 25-20)

Despite the loss, the Lady Lions received solid contribution from several players including Katie Collier and Claire Walker, who led FHU on the attack, each with eight kills. Bojana Antunovic followed close behind with seven kills of her own while also peppering two service aces. Lindsey Gordon dished out 24 assists in the match while Collier added two blocks.

In the first set of the match, the Cougars came out and took an early 7-4 lead. The Lions battled back as the set progressed and were able to tie the game at 20 late in the set. However, a 5-2 run from Columbia to close out the set solidified the 25-22 victory and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, both sides came out and exchanged points early. With the Cougars leading 8-10 midway through the game they were able to go on a 5-2 run to take a five point lead in the set. They continued to extend their lead down the stretch and were able to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 set win.

Columbia College kept their foot on the gas pedal in the third set, as they jumped out to an early six point lead. The Lions did their best to get back into the game but were unable to catch up to the Cougars as Columbia closed out the set to complete the three game sweep with a 25-20 victory.
Caroline Clifford led Columbia College on the attack witih 11 kills while also contributing two service aces. Pamela Jaime followed close behind with 10 kills while Yamilet Velazquez dished out 18 assists. Zori Curry countered FHU's attack on the front line with four blocks in the match.

With the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 1-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Columbia College improves to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in AMC play with the win.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions will not get much of a break following Friday's match, as they are right back at it Saturday, September 16th for a match-up with Stephens College. Match time is slated for 2:00 PM at the Brewer Sports Center.
