MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Freed-Hardeman University men's
soccer team won its seventh match of the season on Tuesday evening against
Faulkner University by the score of 3-1. With the win, the Lions move their season record to 7-2 and equal their
win total from a year ago.
Tuesday evening's match was a battle of two fairly evenly
matched teams. FHU got on the
scoreboard in the 10th minute off a header by Ryan Engineer from a Travis
Shivers pass. The game would be
controlled in the midfield for the rest of the half and remain 1-0 into
halftime. In the second half, the
game opened up more with both teams finding good scoring opportunities. Faulkner was able to tie the game off a
free kick just outside the box. FHU would waste little time in answering as Simbarashe Zvaita scored the
game winner in the 75th minute off a header from Nolan Beede's
corner kick. Beede would then add
an insurance goal less than ten minutes later off a Ryan Engineer assist.
FHU
outshot Faulkner 10 to 6 for the match with five coming on goal. Alexandre Girodo was credited with six
saves in goal for the Lions.
"I thought this was a big win for
our guys tonight," said head coach Jason Elliott. "We did not play with composure
when we had the lead but the response when they tied it was great. I thought that was a very positive sign
for our team to hang in there and make the plays at the end of the match."
The
Lions will now get some much needed rest until Oct. 12 when conference foe
Martin Methodist comes to town for a key match.
