LEBANON, Tenn. - Freed-Hardeman's late-match push came up just a little bit short in a 2-1 loss to Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Thursday afternoon.
Julie Bracknell scored in the 86th minute to pull FHU within striking distance, but the Lady Lions could not get off another shot on goal before the match ended. With seconds left, Bracknell sent a cross into the box that sailed just behind Nikki Ceeney and Whitney Newby.
Cumberland opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Morgan Shaffer took control of a bad pass in the FHU defense and was able to beat keeper Tiffany Harris to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 78th minute when Helena Dimantas Farias got behind the Lady Lion defense on a free kick and put the ball past Harris to extend Cumberland's lead.
Bracknell scored eight minutes later after touching around CU keeper Cierra Boots, who came out to challenge her.
Cumberland outshot FHU 24-14 and held a 10-5 edge on shots on goal. Harris stopped eight shots for the Lady Lions.
FHU returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 3, against Lyon (Ark.) College at noon.
