HENDERSON, Tenn. - Sydney Rice recorded her 1000th career kill, but her milestone was not enough to help the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions to a win over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University as FHU dropped a straight-sets match to the visiting Trojans.
The way the three sets played out almost identically. TNU held a narrow 16-15 lead in every set and managed to pull away from that point forward, including a run of seven straight points in the second set.
FHU led 15-14 in the third set before the Trojans rolled off four straight points and extended their lead to four (20-16) after one of three ball-handling errors by the Lady Lions. Freed-Hardeman would not be able to pull back as TNU completed the sweep.
Errors again caused problems for Freed-Hardeman. The Lady Lions committed 18 attack errors and seven service errors. TNU, meanwhile, committed no service errors and had only three reception errors. The Trojans also out-hit FHU, .289 to .183.
Nataly Gutierrez led the FHU attack with 12 kills with Rice adding nine and Fernanda Ferreira adding five. Callie West paced the defense with 12 digs.
With her 1000th career kill, Rice joins an elite group of players as only the fourth Lady Lion to reach the plateau. The others include Renata Pedreria, Karina Souza and Randal Prince.
FHU returns to action on Thursday with a visit to Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College.
