Jim Sanderson begins his second season as head coach of the Lion basketball program after spending 24 years as the head basketball coach at Faulkner (Ala.) University where he led his team to a NAIA National Championship in 2001.

In his first season with the Lions, Sanderson led his team to a 19-12 record, including signature wins over Park University, who was ranked 12th in the nation.

Prior to his arrival at Freed-Hardeman, Sanderson posted a record of 481-296 at Faulkner University, good enough to rank him among the top 10 most-winning coaches in NAIA basketball history. He capped off his career at Faulkner University in 2013 with a NAIA National Tournament appearance after leading his team to a 29-6 record.

Throughout his time with the Eagles, he led his teams to six conference tournament championships and received Coach of the Year honors on five occasions, including National Coach of the Year honors in 1999 after leading his team to a 30-6 record.

Prior to his coaching career, Sanderson attended the University of Alabama, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1982.

Sanderson's wife, Jill, whom he describes as the best coach's wife around, has taught elementary art for 14 years. He also has a daughter, Katie, who is employed as a Nurse Practitioner in Montgomery, Ala. and a son named Kyle who graduated from Faulkner University with a degree in Sports Management.

Drew Stutts enters his first season as Assistant Coach for the Lion Basketball program. Originally from Florence, Ala., Stutts played collegiately at Northwest Shoals Community College and University of North Alabama, where he graduated in 2011 with a degree in Physical Education.

Throughout his college playing career from 2008-2011, Stutts served as a coach at his high school alma mater, where he helped lead Mars Hill Bible School to two Final Four Appearances and one Elite Eight.

Following his college career from 2011-2014, Stutts served as Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Corner High School, a Class 5A school in Birmingham, Ala. From 2014-2017, he continued his coaching career at Class 7A Hewitt Trussville High School, where he served as the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach for the Huskies.

“My family and I are beyond excited to join the FHU family,” Stutts said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Coach Sanderson. He is first and foremost a great Christian man as well as a proven winner on the court. The chance to coach at Freed-Hardeman University with him was an opportunity I could not pass up. I am thrilled to be joining the Lions coaching staff for the upcoming season.”

Stutts has been married to his wife Amanda since 2010. They have two sons, Roman (4) and Deacon (2).
