Matt Barker enters his third year as Sports Information Director in the Freed-Hardeman Athletic office. Originally from Evansville, Ind., Barker received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Freed-Hardeman in 2006 and added a Master of Arts in Corporate Communications from Austin Peay State University in 2011. 
 
After graduating from Freed-Hardeman in 2006, Barker worked as a Sports Reporter in the Middle Tennessee area, covering high school sports in Robertson and Sumner County. Following his time in print media, Barker was employed at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), where he administered four postsecondary education scholarships for the State of Tennessee. Following his time at THEC, Barker worked two years in the Financial Aid office at Freed-Hardeman before transitioning to the Athletic office in the summer of 2014.

In his role as Sports Information Director, Barker is in charge of all aspects of publicity for the FHU Athletic Department and its 15 collegiate sports, which includes writing press releases, game recaps and coordinating the submission of statistics to the American Midwest Conference (AMC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He also oversees all athletic department publications including media guides, promotional materials and social media graphics. Barker also maintains the athletic web site and social media platforms and coordinates staffing of game day operations for all home athletic contests.

Barker
 is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Sports Information Directors of America (NAIA SIDA), where he is Chair of the Branding Committee and member of the Workshop Committee.

On campus, Barker is the Athletic Department representative on the Staff Relations Committee (SRC), a committee that provides a direct channel from staff members to University administration to disseminate information and a forum by which employees can discuss issues of general concern to them. Barker is also a member of the FHU Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee, where he assists in coordinating the nomination and selection process each year. 

In addition to his responsibilities as a Sports Information Director, Barker also works for the Jackson (Tenn.) Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, as a Public Address Announcer during home games.

Barker has been married to his wife, Lauren, since November 2006. They have two children: Riley (7) and Holland (5).
